The port of San Pedro de Macoris is located on the Higuamo River on the Southern coast of the island, about 60 kilometers East of Santo Domingo.  This port is used mainly for exporting sugar and molasses produced by several sugar cane mills in the region; it is also used to import bulk fertilizers, coal and cement clinkers in bulk.  Occasionally fertilizers in bags and cement in bags are also exported in small vessels to the adjacent islands.  Also tankers discharge fuel and diesel oil to shore tanks.

 

Being situated at the mouth of the river Higuamo, the port is subjected to continuos silting why drafts and depths given here are only indications at the time of publishing and may have changad since.

 

The bottom in the Entrance channel and harbour consists generally of soft mud and silt.

 

Controlling depth in the Entrance channel is 6.7 meters.
